Disciplinary Actions

SAMPLE WORDING: When inappropriate use of the Internet is determined through due process the result will be the cancellation of those privileges. The system administrators will deem what is appropriate use and their decision is final. The system administrator may close an account at any time as required. The administration, faculty, and staff may request the administrator to deny, revoke or suspend specific user accounts. Any student identified as a security risk may be denied access.

Due Process: If a school district has acknowledged the use of the school network for educational purposes, denial of the use of that system should only be through due process. Therefore schools should follow the process of:

  • Notice to a student of an alleged violation.
  • The opportunity of the student to respond to the allegation.
  • No denial of an Internet account in advance without a hearing.

If the school district has not identified the use of the Internet for Educational purposes, then use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and a standard disclaimer (not referring to due process) may be included. In that case:

System Administrator: The responsible parties may be somewhat different from district to district. (See the Responsible Personnel section.) Make certain that disciplinary measures for any infringement of the AUP are consistent with other disciplinary measures and other current school policies. For example, teachers will deal with plagiarism from Internet sites on a student paper in the same manner as plagiarism from other sources in accordance with the school district student policy.
