Self Paced Tutorials

NH e-Learning for Educators develops tutorials that are self paced and can be completed in any time span that best meets your needs. The tutorials are offered in a variety of content areas. main content of the tutorial is provided in the Unit Content sections. The tutorials are organized into content units. Each unit has a brief description, a set of goals, and the readings and activities that will engage you in learning the tutorial content. After completing all the readings and assignments in a unit, a five question quiz is used to assess learning and complete the unit. Each tutorial will earn professional development hours upon successful completion that can be used for re-certification and licensing continuing education units.

ST-01 Bullying Awareness and Prevention

In an effort to assist schools in providing training for ALL school related employees, volunteers, substitute teachers and others, the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Program and the NH e-Learning for Educators Project, both programs of the New Hampshire Department of Education, have developed this short and simple tutorial training for bullying awareness. This tutorial is divided into three sections: Understanding Bullying, the Impact of Cyberbullying, and Understanding the New Hampshire Pupil Safety and Violence Prevention Act. As you complete each unit of the tutorial, you will be asked to submit an online assessment. Once your assessments for all three units are submitted and evaluated, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 3 hours of professional development for this tutorial training. This certificate can be used to demonstrate to your school(s) that you have satisfied the required basic training in bullying awareness and prevention. Additional professional development opportunities should be offered through your school, district, or SAU, annually.

ST-02 Substitute Teaching: Tools and Tips for Success

This online tutorial will provide you with some basic knowledge and skills necessary for being an effective substitute teacher. Proper preparation before substituting in a school or district will greatly increase your confidence and comfort level when facing the students who will be with you in the classroom. This tutorial is designed to help you better understand the conditions and responsibilities necessary for being a substitute teacher. You will get a brief overlook of the situation in education today and understand how teachers and students fit into the changing landscape. You will explore some basic skills and techniques for teaching lessons to students and review some strategies for managing any behavioral issues that you may encounter. Finally, you will get a basic understanding of the kinds of required policies and procedures that schools require, including the NH required pupil safety policy. As you complete each unit of the tutorial, you will be asked to submit an online assessment. Once your assessments for all of the units are submitted and evaluated, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 5 hours of professional development for this tutorial training. This certificate can be used to demonstrate to your school(s) that you have completed basic training in substitute teaching.

ST-03 The NH 3 Tiered Bullying Prevention and Intervention Model

In an effort to assist schools in providing training for ALL school related employees, volunteers, substitute teachers and others, the NH e-Learning for Educators Project at the New Hampshire Department of Education developed this simple tutorial training on developing a three tiered bullying prevention program. This tutorial is divided into four units. The first three units cover the three tiers of the NH Bullying Prevention Model, primary prevention, secondary intervention, and targeting of severe or chronic bullies and victims. The last unit covers the development of successful bullying programs in schools. As you complete each unit of the tutorial, you will be asked to submit an online assessment. Additional professional development opportunities should be offered through your school, district, or SAU, annually.

ST-04 Ten Technology Skills for Learning and Teaching

This online tutorial will provide you with some basic knowledge and skills necessary for effectively using technology to enhance your teaching and learning. As you complete each unit of the tutorial, you will be asked to submit an online assessment. Once your assessments for all of the units are completed, you should send a Tutorial Completion Notice. Submission of this notice will trigger an evaluation of your engagement in the activities and assessments. Following this evaluation, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 15 hours of professional development for this tutorial training.

ST-05 Developing Successful Online Teaching and Learning Practices

This self-paced tutorial will take you through some of the features found in the discussion-based, asynchronous model for online learning. This tutorial uses online readings, activities, and videos to demonstrate best practices for successful online teaching and learning. You will explore online content resources as well as the important role that rich discussion, meaningful feedback, and self-reflection plays in providing quality online learning experiences. If you are ready to explore the benefits of teaching and learning online, this tutorial will provide you with some guidance and resources to begin your journey. As you complete each unit of the tutorial, you will be asked to submit an online assessment. Once your assessments for all of the units are completed, you should send a Tutorial Completion Notice. Submission of this notice will trigger an evaluation of your engagement in the activities and assessments. Following this evaluation, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 10 hours of professional development for this tutorial training.

ST-07 Developing An Effective Lau Plan for English Language Learners

The purpose of Developing Your Lau Plan for English Language Learners is to offer information and support to local education agencies (LEAs) about the federal responsibilities and state guidance regarding educational services for English Learners. In the Lau vs. Nichols Supreme Court Decision of 1974, the federal government determined LEAs are required to identify its ELLs, to design an effective program, to employ appropriate personnel, to align the instruction to state and local content standards, and to provide ongoing assessments to ascertain growth in English language proficiency and in the comprehension of academic content. The two units of this tutorial will guide you through the elements required in a Lau Plan as well as a review of examples of Lau Plans and methods and strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of your plan. At the end of each unit, there is a brief assessment. Once your assessments for both of the units are completed, you should send a Tutorial Completion Notice. Submission of this notice will trigger an evaluation of your engagement in the activities and assessments. Following this evaluation, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 5 hours of professional development for this tutorial training.

ST-08 Active Shooter in the Workplace Response and Preparedness Training

This tutorial provides guidance to individuals, including administrators and teachers, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter situation. It is important for educators to be trained so that they can react if they are ever confronted with an active shooter situation. As these situations evolve quickly, quick decisions could mean the difference between life and death. The information presented in this tutorial is summarized in the booklet titled “Active Shooter: How To Respond,” published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The booklet provides guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, who become involved in an active shooter situation, and discusses how to react when law enforcement responds. The contents of this tutorial are freely available from the FEMA Management Institute.

Online Tutorial Model

Tutorial Content Units
The main content of the tutorial is provided in the Unit Content sections. Each unit content section has the unit number and the title of the unit, along with a brief description of the contents and activities that will engage you in the tutorial. To begin each unit, click on the Unit Assignments link, which will open up the Unit Page which has the assignment for the unit.

Unit Assignments
The unit page has the unit Overview, Goals, and Assignments for you to complete in the unit. The assignments will help you achieve the goals of the unit and should be completed in total. The assignments may be links to website for reading, or may ask that you access files from the Tutorial Resources folder do something with them. There are normally several ways to access the materials, which may include links to off site, references to materials in the folder, and embedded materials from outside sites such as Scribd or YouTube. When the materials are outside links, the actual web address is provided for you in the Reading Links section. If you have trouble or difficulty accessing the material in one way, you may be able to access it in another way.

Unit Assessments
After completing all the readings and assignments in the unit, click on the Unit Assessments link in the Unit Content section and follow the instructions for taking the assessment to complete the unit. When you have completed all the units and submitted all the assessments, don't forget to submit a Tutorial Completion notice.

The small areas to the right and left of the tutorial main space are called Side Bars. The information in these areas are not necessarily specific to the tutorial, or necessary for achieving the goals of the tutorial.
