Face to face session: October 14th at 9AM at NHDOE in Room 15
*** This session will also be available as an online Elluminate session for those who want to save the gas! All you need is your web browser for the online session. You can simply Join the Elluminate session using this link. (We suggest testing your connection about 30 minutes beforehand.)

Internet Safety Open Meeting (9/23-24)
Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
The Internet Safety Technical Task Force (ISTTF) is a research and advisory group operating out of the Berkman Center at Harvard. They are hosting an open meeting on September 23-24 at Harvard which looks quite interesting. The event is free and open to the public. It will also be webcast. Here’s the meeting description:
This meeting will be an opportunity for members of the public to learn about the work of the Task Force, to explore the different technology-related problems and solutions under consideration, and to raise questions and share ideas. The day’s agenda will include over a dozen presentations of youth online safety solutions based on a range of technologies, including age verification, biometrics, filtering and auditing, text analysis, and combinations thereof. Participants will also hear research perspectives that emphasize the importance of developing and implementing socially-based solutions and interventions that address the causes of risky online behavior among youth. Additionally, on Wednesday, September 24, participants are invited to hear presentations by leading social network sites regarding recent measures they have undertaken to make their sites safer for youth. The meeting will conclude with an open discussion of the technologies presented on the previous day.

Here’s an interesting survey opportunity which might give you some food for thought about how your school’s web presence is helping your overall mission. The Center for Digital Education, in partnership with the National School Boards Association, conducts the national Digital School Districts Survey. All U.S. public school districts are invited to participate in the study. The survey examines and documents school boards and districts’ online presence, technology applications that allow the public to interact with school board members, administrators and teachers as well as their access to information such as school board calendars, districts policies, and technology use in the district and classrooms. This is an online survey with 21 multiple-choice type questions and 6 narrative-type responses. They will accept one response per school district — deadline is Friday September 26, 2008.

There’s a great article in the 8/18/08 issue of TechLearning about building better ePortfolios. The article features the work of several K-12 teachers around the country who have used various software, handheld, and other solutions for student creation of e-portfolios. It’s a quick read with good information and ideas about the advantage teachers give students when they incorporate e-portfolio work in their teaching.
