NCLB FUNDS TRANSFERABILITY

======================================

www.nheon.org/oet/nclb

Since this year’s NCLB Title II-D grants are only competitive, a few districts have asked whether they still have the option of transferring funds INTO Title II-D from other Title programs under the REAP and FLEX guidelines. The answer is yes, this option is still available and the guidelines for doing so remain the same as in previous years. If your district has funds this year from another title program that you’d like to transfer into Title II-D, the application format (short 2 page form) is similar to the previous year’s application. Visit www.nheon.org/oet/nclb to download the application.

NCES REPORT: COMPUTER AND INTERNET USE

======================================

http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2006065

The National Center for Education Statistics has released a report titled “Computer and Internet Use by Students in 2003.” The report examines the use of computers and the Internet by American children in grades PreK-12, looking at “the overall rate of use (that is, the percentage of individuals in the population who are users), the ways in which students use the technologies, where the use occurs (home, school, and other locations), and the relationships of these aspects of computer and Internet use to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics such as students' age and race/ethnicity and their parents' education and family income. This report confirms that patterns of computer and Internet use seen in previous research are observed in more recent data. One of the more important findings presented in the report is that schools appear to help narrow the disparities between different types of students in terms of computer use. Differences in the rates of computer use are smaller at school than they are at home when considering such characteristics as race/ethnicity, family income, and parental education.” Click on the link above to read the full report.

BRITTANICA ONLINE SCHOOL EDITION PREVIEW

======================================

http://school.eb.com

The folks at Brittanica have set up a version of Brittanica Online School Edition for New Hampshire schools to preview for the entire Fall 2006 semester. They have provided the following information: “Britannica Online School Edition is the largest collection of K12 databases available today, with over 56 million words of information and more than 130,000 articles. Designed for all levels of learning, BOLSE offers students a gateway to the vast resources of Encyclopædia Britannica. BOLSE gives teachers and students instant access to four complete encyclopedias that ensure consistency with classroom topics and age-appropriate language. This unique database also offers high-quality online learning materials developed by teachers and curriculum experts, as well as a dictionary, thesaurus, Internet guide, atlas, and more. Users can search all encyclopedias simultaneously, or select a single age-appropriate database.”

How to use the free state-wide preview for New Hampshire schools

“Visit BOLSE at http://school.eb.com  and simply type in the username (“nhschools”) and password (“library”). This will give users complete and total access to BOLSE, both on-site and remote, until the end of December. We can provide the alerts, notifications and training materials to all Media Resource Specialists, Librarians and Principals to get the preview up and running smoothly. We can also customize preview to allow for usage metrics to indicate how the students and teachers are utilizing BOLSE during your preview.”
