STATE CONTRACT
PRICING ON SOFTWARE
======================================
http://www.shi.com
The
following information was provided by the folks at Software House
International:
The
State of New Hampshire has signed an Academic Select Agreement for Microsoft
products, which schools can also use for their purchasing needs. There are three
pools of products covered under an Academic Select:
- Systems
(really just the Windows Desktop OS Upgrades)
- Applications
(Office and all the other desktop applications)
- Servers
(Exchange, Windows, SQL . . .)
The
State originally signed up for all three of these pools, but on the 1st
anniversary compliancy check that Microsoft did - to see if the State had
reached the 40% goal required by Microsoft to stay in that pool, the State
had not reached the goal for the Systems pool - so unfortunately the State
loss the ability to purchase in the Desktop OS Upgrades pool.
What
does that mean? Essentially - any academic institution in the State that
wants to purchase Windows Upgrades at the State Contract price has two
options:
- Buy
plan old shrink-wrapped - at $80 each or
- If you
are looking for at least 5 licenses - you can get MOLP licensing which
is $65 each.
For all
other Microsoft Products - Office, Visio, Project, Windows Servers, Exchange
Servers, etc., you still have the opportunity to by off of this contract and SAVE.

SAFETY: HEADPHONES
and HEARING LOSS
======================================
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-09-12-hearing-loss_x.htm
This article recounts a growing concern among doctors
regarding the use of headphones and hearing loss. Are you and your students
using iPods and other audio devices with headphones? “Researchers at Boston
Children's Hospital determined that listening to a portable music player with
headphones at 60% of its potential volume for one hour a day is relatively
safe.” You might want to take a look at some of these resources and talk it
out with your students:
·
Dangerous Decibels
Teacher’s Guide - A K-8 curriculum supplement with hands-on science
activities about the anatomy and physiology of hearing, the physics of sound,
and health-related behaviors for prevention of noise-induced hearing loss.
