NETSMARTZ in NH

======================================

http://www.nheon.org/netsmartz/

On February 18, 2004, Attorney General Peter W. Heed, Governor Craig R. Benson, and Department of Education Commissioner Nicholas Donohue announced a cooperative effort to bring the ‘NetSmartz Workshop’ to New Hampshire’s children. The program, provided at no cost to New Hampshire, uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children (ages 5 thru 17) how to stay safer on the Internet. The goal of the ‘NetSmartz Workshop’ is to extend the safety awareness of children to prevent victimization and increase self-confidence whenever they go online.

A specific version of the ‘NetSmartz Workshop’ was designed for New Hampshire. When students complete workshop activities, they’ll receive a computer-generated certificate signed by New Hampshire Attorney General Peter Heed. Downloadable NetSmartz activities and lots of additional materials for classroom use are available on New Hampshire Educators Online at: http://www.nheon.org/netsmartz/.

The ‘NetSmartz Workshop’ was made possible via a public-private partnership with the United States Congress, United States Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Boys and Girls Clubs of America. It was designed to entertain children while educating them about Internet Safety. For questions about the Attorney General’s Initiative to bring this to New Hampshire, contact Tim Brackett. For questions about its implementation in NH schools or to provide feedback about website improvements, contact Cathy Higgins.

======================================

The Raymond School District has an immediate opening for the technology director position. The current director, Steve Robert, is hoping to have a few days to work with a person to replace him before his last day, March 3rd. Anyone interested should send a resume to lhoulebriggs.sau@raymond.k12.nh.us .

The technology director is responsible for SAU #33 which consists of the administrative office and three schools (elementary, middle, and high school). The person should be capable of maintaining computer equipment down to near component level. The Director is responsible for maintaining the District Computer Network Infrastructure.  Since this is an SAU position, the Director advises the Superintendent on technology Issues. Steve recommends this opportunity to any qualified persons who wish to manage multiple sites and be influential in a district’s technology future.

A Study of Technology’s Role in Raising Student Achievement

In an effort to help determine the effectiveness of educational technology for learning reading and math, the U.S. Department of Education has announced that it will fund a study of 16 computer-based reading and math products. The products, from 12 different companies, were developed to enhance the learning of reading in grade one, reading comprehension in grade four, pre-algebra in grade six, and algebra in grade nine. They were chosen in a peer-review process from a pool of 163 applications. Visit the link above to learn more.

KIDS KONNECT

======================================

http://www.kidskonnect.com/

We recently learned of an interesting web resource. KidsKonnect is created and maintained by educators to provide a safe Internet gateway for kids. Over 300 portal pages cover most of the curriculum topics taught in schools. All fifty states have a page of state information. There are also many fun and recreational pages, most of which have been requested by children. The site was recently selected by Classroom Connect for their A+ Web Gallery, has been reviewed by USA Today, and is included on the Illinois Education Association and National Education Association Web sites.  Take a look!
