EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY NEWS From
the New Hampshire Department of Education ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ET News is sent from the Office of Educational Technology at the New Hampshire Department of Education. Please note that, while ET News is forwarding information about technology related products and services, we have not conducted a formal evaluation of such products/services. We encourage you to let us know if you find a particular item of high quality and value to your school. You can find previous issues of ETNews on our web site at www.nheon.org/oet/etnews . ============================================ http://www.nheon.org/oet/survey02/ We are aware that many schools have had difficulty accessing the online School Technology Survey and Tech Planning Approval Rubric in the past two weeks. Please be aware that we are trying to address technical issues as quickly as we can. We appreciate your patience with the temperamental nature of these online tools. Due to the delays you have experienced accessing these tools, we have adjusted the deadline for submitting this data. The old deadline for both the survey and the plan was November 1st. The new deadline for both is December 1, 2002. When you do try to access either tool, please be sure to clear your browsers cache before you start. Also, please note that your school ID is a five digit number assigned by the DOE. It is not the seven digit NCES code. Contact us if you cant locate your code.

http://www.sl.universalservice.org/ ============================================ The MarcoPolo program has been very well received all across New Hampshire. Many, many teachers have discovered the excellent online resources available on the MarcoPolo website. Some of you have used the NHEON curriculum frameworks area to locate MarcoPolo content aligned to NH standards. We know that with the WorldCom issues that arose this year, many of you have been wondering whether the MarcoPolo Program will survive. This recent announcement from MarcoPolo indicates good news: MarcoPolo, an education-technology program founded by MCI in 1997 and, more recently, supported solely by WorldCom, will continue to receive financial support. MarcoPolo brings unmatched value in online Internet content and teacher training to our nations educators. MarcoPolo has been built on trust, honesty, and integrity: unwavering values that ensure quality is never compromised, and decisions are driven by data and educator needs. WorldCom
has long recognized that MarcoPolo was emerging as a national treasure
for education, one that would require diverse and multiple funding sources.
Initial planning had been underway by WorldCom to start a new and independent
foundation called the MarcoPolo Education Foundation, and due to the circumstances
surrounding WorldCom this foundation has been put in place. This entity
will attract broader support and diverse leadership from public and private
sources to ensure MarcoPolo will be available to all teachers and students
in perpetuity. Although the WorldCom Foundation will no longer provide grants or gifts, WorldCom Inc. will continue its core funding this year, and will allocate an additional $6 million beginning in 2003 to support core MarcoPolo components through contractual arrangements for content and program development, administrative and management expenses, and other direct expenses associated with the MarcoPolo effort. Parallel to WorldComs efforts the new MarcoPolo Education Foundation, now established, will seek funds and in-kind support from government, private foundations and business. The goal of the additional funding is to reestablish and achieve the aggressive goals for MarcoPolo which were agreed to by our Content partners and all 50 states: train 2.4 million teachers, provide 3300 interactive lessons and thousands of educational resources across the K-12 curriculum, and reach one million on-going teacher users by 2005. With a diverse and independent board and long-term funding in place, the MarcoPolo Education Foundation will be well positioned to assume management of MarcoPolo and address the countrys education priorities related to quality teacher training, state standards, student assessment, and support for underserved schools. MarcoPolo is alive and growing. An advanced MarcoPolo web site was recently launched adding new resources for teachers and state education agencies. The newest MarcoPolo site - ReadWriteThink - under the direction of the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English will be launched in the next several weeks. We are pleased to announce MarcoPolo, a national treasure, will be saved for the benefit of millions of teachers and students for generations to come.
